Questions about the Ewoks episodes they did release

Post  EwokWizard on Sat 13 Aug 2011, 12:43 pm

What is different about the episodes that were released in "Tales from the Endor Woods" and "The Haunted Village"?
I have heard some people say they were edited. When I watch them I feel like they altered the soundtrack a bit. Is there any truth to this?

Sadly, yes, they did in fact alter them. The sound is off, and the soundtrack isn't from the actual Ewok cartoon series! It was specially composed for the videos, around their second or third release in the U.S. back in the late '90's. I bought the VHS "Star Wars Animated Classics: Ewoks" back around 1997 or so, and remember thinking "Oh boy! Saturday morning all over again!" I remember the great music from the series. But sadly, while the music on the VHS and DVDs is haunting and interesting, it's not the original. In addition, they cut a few teeny seconds from a few episodes. The one I can see the most is "The Cries of The Trees." At the end, after Morag has been defeated, Aunt Bozzie actually appologizes to Wicket for treating him meanly! So yeah, the DVD's have been altered.

Did they also change some of the sound effects? Some of them seem uncharacteristic of the show

Quite possibly. The original Nelvana show had some pretty weird sounding effects. They sounded alien, and more like the sounds you'd hear in the movies. The DVDs and VHS tapes were re-dubbed I think. Also, there are some first season episodes that are not on the DVD.

The Curse of The Jindas

Blue Harvest

The Land of The Gupins

The Tree of Light

The Three Lessons

The Three Lessons
is a particuarly good episode in that it shows Chirpa grooming Kneesaa for eventual tribal leadership.

Yeah, I've seen most of those at least once. I have a copy all the unreleased ones on DVD too. Are there episodes other than the Morag ones that have a big LOgray focus?

Season II (Which admittedly isn't as good as season 1) has "Night of the Stranger" and "The First Apprentice." Both of these have a lot of Logray action if I remember. The First Apprentice deals with Logray attempting to guide Teebo, but Teebo keeps being a lurdo and goofing up, wanting to do bigger magic, etc. Logray's former apprentice finds Teebo and things proceed from there...I also like Logray in "To save Deej." It shows his depth of knowlege and how much he really does care for his fellow Ewoks by remembering the ingredients in the healing potion for Deej. He tries to guide the Warrick brothers in their quest.

Also he calls Willy a Lurdo. "Danvey Lurdo! No!"

The Haunted Village have edited versions of all four Ewoks episodes with Morag's appearances. Tales from the Endor Woods have other 4 episodes, chosen by George Lucas for the 2004 DVD.

The original Sunstar vs. Shadowstone (not the cut version from VHS or DVD) shows Teebo telling Wicket he would ask Logray to be his wizard apprentice, and some minutes later, shows latara telling some congratulations for Teebo, when the gang (including Wicket and Kneesaa) were going to the forest.

The DVD never could be released without The Three Lessons, the most important episode on Kneesaa's plot on becoming chieftainess.

This is one of the many reasons we need the uncut episodes on DVD!

I'll risk being a pariah and say that I didn't grow up with the cartoons or watch them on TV, I just happen to be a random younger fan who enjoys the show and I don't mind the recut versions.

Well there's nothing wrong with that. I myself grew up in the 80's, and Jedi was the first Star Wars film I saw in the theater. I was about 7, I think when it came out in 1983, so Lucas's "merchandising" gimmick of the Ewoks hit me like a furry freight train. And I didn't mind! I bought (or rather Ma bought me) all the Ewok toys, toothbrush, art things, bed sheets, plushies. I was Wicket for Halloween. And I still buy 'em! I loved watching the television show as well as Droids on Saturday mornings. All these years later (I'm 34,) and I still love Ewoks. Both the characters and the series. From my point of view, it's refreshing to see younger folks such as yourself who can relax and enjoy these classic characters in today's "That's stupid and cute!" or "Ewoks ruined the Trilogy!" society. I think its great when younger fans get involved and enjoy the cartoon series and the Ewoks movies - you dont have to be a kid of the 80s to enjoy them. Wink

Yeah, I agree. I'm of the generation that Lucas tried to target with the prequels. I grew up on the original trilogy though and never thought anything bad about the ewoks. When they were released on DVD I realized they were awesome.

If you like the cartoons, I'd check out the Ewoks tv movies as well if you havent yet - they're a real treat if you're a new fan or an old one. I saw them as a kid and when the DVD was released I picked it up and continue to enjoy them. Here is the official title of the DVD release "Star Wars Ewok Adventures - Caravan of Courage / The Battle for Endor" - 2 separate movies on 1 double-sided DVD.
